Suggested answer: According to the female announcer, the suspect wanted to take a train to his hometown. Because he did not have enough money for a train ticket, he bought a platform ticket and tried to get by under false pretences.

The set phrase 蒙混过关 is the key to the second part of the answer.

On the screen, two interrogators are interrogating the suspect, but the question is omitted from this clip. Based upon the announcer’s report and Ji Chong‘s reply, the question is very close to “How come you are still wearing stolen clothes?”  or “ Why do you steal clothes?”

Based upon what the announcer said, when Ji Chong worked at a restaurant, he earned more than one thousand yuan a month; but, since he was a goldbricker, in a very short period, the restaurant owner kicked him out. After that, he committed crimes four times involving four thousand yuan within less than half month.

This is what you heard:

• 进来: refers to be detained / to be in jail; since he said this during the interrogation,  he uses 来；in other words, 来 indicates he is under arrest or being detained
• 放出去: release from his detention / from jail
• 逮着[dǎizháo]: to be caught (a criminal / etc.); a colloquial way to say “being arrested”
• 涉嫌[shèxián]: be suspected of being involved
• 刑事拘留[xíngshìjūliú]: criminal detention or custody

Note: Ji Chong speaks Mandarin and uses simple colloquial vocabulary, but his voice is not very clear, perhaps, because he is despondent; plus, his responses are spontaneous; you may need to listen a couple of times to fully understand.

Suggested answer: The anchorman said that Ji Chong has been scared and anxious since he started to commit crimes and spending stolen money also made him very uneasy. Ji Chong felt great regret when he was caught.

The anchorman’s remarks on his hope that the young man has learned a life lesson from this episode and will make a new start in his life.

Take note of the difference between Ji Chong’s quoted replies and how the anchorman summarizes Ji Chong’s attitude. In any of the video clips, Ji Chong does not offer any remorse, which is contrary to the anchorman’s summary.
