故宫博物院成立于1925年，是建立在明清两代皇宫（紫禁城）的基础上，兼容建筑、藏品与蕴含其中的丰富的宫廷历史文化为一体的中国最大的博物馆，也是世界上极少数同时具备艺术博物馆、建筑博物馆、历史博物馆、宫廷文化博物馆等特色，并且符合国际公认的“原址保护”、“原状陈列”基本原则的著名博物馆。故宫（紫禁城）是我国古代宫城发展史上现存的惟一实例和最高典范，也是世界上现存规模最大、保存最完整的砖木结构的古代宫殿建筑群。
The Imperial Palace [Former Palace] Museum was founded in 1925. It is China’s largest museum, built on the foundations of the Ming and Qing dynasty Imperial Palace ([Vermillion] Forbidden City) and integrating architecture, artifact preservation, and the storage of its abundant palace history and culture into one whole. It is also one of the few renowned museums in the world that simultaneously possesses the particular features of an art museum, architectural museum, history museum, etc., and moreover conforms to the internationally recognized basic principles of “original site preservation” and “original state of display.” The Imperial Palace (Forbidden City) is the only extant example and the supreme paragon in the historical development of our nation’s ancient palace residences.
