1965年7月,北京市开始修建第一条地铁,六年以后通车运营。通车时共有十座车站,每天乘客达三万多人。1984年,第二条地铁开始通车运营。当时北京地铁的运营总长度约四十公里。 北京地铁发展非常快。至2010年,北京地铁的运营总长度约230公里,共有近150座设计美观的车站,每天乘客达500多万人。北京地铁在市内运营的线路已有八条。采用先进的计算机控制,技术是一流的。运营线路包括1号线、2号线、4号线、5号线、10号线、13号线、八通线和奥运支线。北京地铁还修建了一条机场线。 北京地铁市内线路票价非常便宜。采用计算机售票和计算机检票。市内线路采用单一票价制,单程票价为人民币2元,换乘其它市内线路不再另收费。市内线路可使用计算机控制的一卡通。用一卡通还可以乘坐北京市内的公共汽车及电车。 北京地铁的机场线也采用单一票价制,单程票价为人民币25元。机场线不属于市内线路,换乘其它市内线路要另收费。机场线可使用一卡通。从北京市中心到机场,“打的”至少要人民币100元。坐机场线又快又便宜。

In July 1965, Beijing began constructing its first subway. Six years later, it was opened to the public for operation. During the opening period, there were a total of ten stations with daily passengers of over 30,000. In 1984, the second subway was opened to the public for operation. The total operation length of the Beijing Subway during that time was approximately 40 kilometers.

The Beijing Subway has developed very fast. By the year 2010, the total operating length was approximately 230 kilometers with about 150 artistically designed stations. The number of daily passengers total over 5 million. The Beijing Subway has eight urban lines in operation with advanced computer control technologies. The eight lines include Line 1, Line 2, Line 4, Line 5, Line 10, Line 13, Line BATONG and the Olympic Games branch line. The Beijing Subway has also constructed an Airport Line.

The Beijing Subway is very cheap to ride for the urban lines. The ticket is sold and checked-in through computers now. The urban lines charge flat fares. A one-way fare is RMB 2 Yuan with unlimited free transfers to other urban lines. You may ride on the urban lines by using the computer controlled One-Card Pass (Yikatong) which can also be used on buses and cable cars in Beijing.

The Airport Line of the Beijing Subway also charges a flat fare with a one-way fare of RMB 25 Yuan. The Airport Line is separate from the other urban lines. Passengers must pay an additional fare to transfer to other urban lines. The One-Card Pass can be used on the Airport Line. It costs at least RMB 100 Yuan to get to the airport from downtown Beijing by taxi. Using the Airport Line is fast and inexpensive.
